Christmas this year was spent in NC with the Kuenzel's and we had a fabulous time. We got to stay extra long because it snowed all day long on Christmas day!

Behr and Jade's Challenge

Buddy did so well with The Dog Fighter toy I was a little hesitant to try it with the other two dogs. However, I have the day off so Behr got his turn next. He is not food driven at all. He prefers a ball. So I put cheese inside as a treat. This is on the easy level. I think I can teach Behr to take each piece out and bring it to me in my hand.

Jade's turn came last. Keep in mind Jade gets excited very easily and when I get excited it's even worse. She barks often during training and when she doesn't understand what I want from her that escalates the barking as well.

This video is painfully slow and I ended up turning it off, no one wants to watch an 8 minute clip!

The dogs got "The Dog Fighter" toy by Nina Ottosen from Mama. This is the coolest toy ever. I did start with my most food driven, street smartest dog--so it was really fun.

This is level one: Easy

This is level two: Medium

Level three to come! There are stoppers that I can insert, and then he has to move them before he can slide the cylinders.

Missing Sheena

Oh Sheena I sure do you miss you! This week I've looked around for you, thought I heard your raspy meow, or heard you digging in the litter box. There are so many things you did for me, and I will always love you dearly! You were the best cat I've ever had.

Here are some things I miss:
Looking up from the couch and you sitting on top step just thinking "come to bed"
Sliding my feet as I walk around so I don't step on you
Worried about grabbing my scarf under the bed you could be lurking and think that I wanna play
Late night cat zoomies with random socks left in odd places
Lifting the toilet seat and you'd come running for a good brushing
Putting on jewelry at my dresser you jump from foot board over to greet me
Walking past the bed where you sleep, I swear 20 hours a day, and you swat me on the butt
Hiding my hands under the covers, so I didn't have to pet you (sorry about that)
But most of all...
Being my snuggle bug and sleeping with me almost nightly. In the crook of my arm, or near my belly under or over the covers, or by my feet. I love and miss you very very much.

Rant

Awake at 4am so sick, but only one day of work left...

There are two posts that are incredibly significant, but I have been sick and so busy I haven't had time.
Dec 8th Sheena had her teeth cleaned and had some removed.
Dec 15th We had a horrible horrible accident and forgot to lock Buddy in his crate. He tore up some presents, magazines, treat bag, and laid on the couch downstairs. Then hw went upstairs and killed Sheena. There is a just a huge post I want to write about that awful event and how much I terribly miss her and I keep looking for her.

However, what is really bothering me are a few comments from about three people.
Things like he will keep on killing--like who? a dog, a human? that's all we have left inside...
At least it was the cat and not your baby--prey drive doesn't mean attack on human, or visa versa.
You'll just have to get rid of him, have you thought of sending him in to be a police dog, to do that attacking on some bad guys?
He should know better, Sheena was in the house first.

Really. You can't just send an adult away to go sniff bombs. You can't stop prey drive, at least completely. You also can't start it- see Jade posts, fail things like agility, retrieve, motivation, overweight. This was a HUGE accident.
Any mother would never leave work with a baby in the house left upstairs. It's simple, dogs aren't trusted. You gotta pee? baby pees with you, or the baby is left in the crib with the door shut, or all dogs are kenneled with the baby elsewhere.

Listen we aren't pregnant, and we aren't getting pregnant anytime soon. I know this sounds absurd but pets are my life, and yes changing my plans to not have kids for dogs is what I'm doing. It sounds nuts to most--but it's what's important to me. I've never been passionate about something, well this is it. When we do get pregnant, I have plenty of dog savvy friends that aren't the above mentioned people that will give feedback on the current dog situation. I also THINK I have a good head on my shoulders but just to be sure, I am calling a behaviorist to come out. I'm also calling our trainer, but that's more for support. If these folks say one ditch him that's different, but those can folks shut up. It's so hard not to tell them that.

To my friends who didn't say anything and just said, I'm sorry about Sheena. Thank you so much, I didn't realize how thankful I should have been for you until now. Even if you called each other and made the above comments, you at least didn't say them to me. In a few days you can come back and say now I'm worried about your crazy ass German Shepherd, you know I realize they aren't easy.

My co-teacher Becky found this book a few weeks ago. She showed it to me today. She knew she couldn't read it aloud to the class, and I can't read it aloud to the class but I'd like to add it to my Christmas List.

The Big Little Book of Happy Sadness by Colin Thompson

My spoiler:

A little boy visits the shelter every Friday, always walks all the way to the end of the cages where it's dark and near the green door. He sees a scruffy 3 legged dog and asks the worker about him. She says why do you want that one, we have 85 others that look so much better and have 4 legs. Today is also his last day before he goes to heaven. He runs home as fast as he can.

His grandmother says remember dogs are for life, not just Christmas. We need to think about it. He says we can't he won't have a life tomorrow. She agrees and sends him on ahead of her before they closed. The dog was shocked not to being led to the green door. They gave him a collar, leash, and tag. That was a first. He can't walk so well, so the boy carries him home.

The dog wonders whether he did go through the green door and is dreaming. He never knew the words cuddle, dinner, walks...Once home they make him a leg. And it ends happy. LOVE IT!

"Buddy Crate"

Well Buddy turns 4 years old on Friday, but he's still not to be trusted. He destroyed the house today!

Around rest time 12:45pm Will texted me photos of the house. I will post photos if I can get them from Will.

Today was Buddy's fifth and last day in house as a free dog. I'm not sure what all he tore up. I know of magazines, a wicker basket, and he ate an entire bag of $11.00 dog treats--possibly the bag too.

So here are some reasons crates are a good thing and not awful, sad, torturous things your dog should never have to get in. Jade and Behr love them, and look for them now that they are in the garage and are only used on the cleaning lady day.

Housetrain (he is less likely to tinkle where he sleeps)
Protection (so he doesn't ingest harmful things)
Protect your property (so he doesn't ruin your things)

To begin we fed the pups in their crate with the door open so they would begin to love the crate. We also would toss treats inside from time to time. The crates are in the family room, but we've read many books and articles discussing location between family room or bedroom. Bedroom isn't an option for us right now. (Cat and I'm allergic to dogs)

Canine Good Citizen

Jade passed AKC's CGC Program yesterday! I was a little set up, but that was probably good. I went to training under the impression that we were going to practice the items I didn't think she could pass. Tommy ran us through the actual test, and at one point I said, "Oh so this is how we practice this one?" Corday replied, "Um, no this is the test."

If I had known I was walking into the test I would have been on edge and Jade would have sensed it. I wouldn't have been so relaxed like it was a regular private lesson like I thought and it really was, not so "scary"

But as I look back under the training label on my blog CGC has come up since 2008 and then April 2009, so it's about time! Just the other day I made two lists a before I pregnant list and a bucket list. On the before I get pregnant list I wrote 2 out of 3 dogs CGC...so 1 down but holy crap the next one is gonna be a challenge!

Yay! Jade you have come a long way. Just watching you yesterday was amazing my standards for you are so high that I think you can't do so much, but when I step back you really can and I don't give you credit.

Parlor Tricks

It's so amazing how most of this stuff was hard for us at one point, but now it's so easy even if we haven't practiced it in a year!

Declawing Cats

Just came here in vent...thank God I don't like confrontation, although maybe I should, I'm certain the world would be a better place if I told you how and when you are f*cking up.

Declawing is actually an amputation of the last joint of your cat's "toes". Gross and you did this since your next house doesn't allow pets? Find a new damn place to live, it was the nicest house for that reason ---no pets.

You did this to all 3 of your cats!
Why did your last beloved cat die?? Oh that's right complications within the same year it got out of your house and practically mutilated since it couldn't protect itself, it was also declawed.

Buddy and I ventured back to dog lessons tonight. It was great. Just us, Ginger a lab puppy, trainer's dog Meiko (black GSD) and Tommy Grammer

We were working on Stay and Come. Buddy did great, I was so proud of him. He didn't hackle, and only had one outburst when the wild puppy got close. I'm quite sure we gave the owner a mild heart attack.
I really think being around Meiko is a good thing since he is so incredibly calm.
I overheard the lab owner talking about dropping her off this Saturday for a stay at Tommy's to train. So jealous I wish we were dropping a dog off there!!

Intro to Agility with Jade!

Jade got into agility! I have no clue if she will do anything, but she can be around other dogs off leash, so we are going! I had to give her training resume on more than one occasion and since she is under 3 years old I was praying they accepted her.

Babies have been a hot topic recently for us. Is it wrong to think, I need to talk to our dog trainer (not family doctor) before we decide to have a baby?

So many people dump their dog when they get pregnant, I feel the complete opposite. I keep questioning the dogs, like...Are you ready for us to have a baby?? HA.

Strangers kids = not a realistic view of how your dog will be around your baby

And from what I gather, you were holding him [dog] while showing him the baby? Bad idea. You took away his ability to flee something that distressed him. When fearful, dogs have 2 natural responses, fight or flight. By holding him, he had no choice but to display his "fight" i.e. growling and snapping.

You need to work hard on:

1. Not babying him- stop holding him or carrying him if you do; this should be reserved for the bay. Best to stop now so it's not a shock to him.

2. Introduce him to older dog savvy kids who come bearing loads of treats. If at any time your dog acts like he doesn't want to meet them, do not force the issue. Slow and steady, baby steps, etc... Forcing him will only make him dig his proverbial heels in deeper.

3. Acknowledge that he is a product of his surroundings- that'd be you. Get some professional help now. Nothing you have written is that alarming to me at all. Pretty minor stuff all in all.

4. Read my blog. Yes, changing your dog's behaviors is going to require work, but everything in life does. And really, a little dog training isn't rocket science.

5. Accept the advice given here with a teaspoon of sugar, you mentioned rehoming your dog to a large group of women who bust their ass to save homeless pets. Your pet has a home and changing homes only takes away a potential home for one of the 7-8 million animals sitting on death row yearly. They are just doing their part to make you aware even if it's a bitter pill to swallow.

So my friend rescued two kittens from the shelter. Yay for rescue!

However, they were the typical adopter who just lost a older cat and let these two cats do whatever they want because they were still sad from their loss.

Last night they mentioned declawing the kittens if they get a new couch. WOAH!

When we came home from the cruise, we left the dogs at the kennel until the next morning since it doesn't cost extra if you pick them up in the morning....aww, Sheena got to hang out with us downstairs again. I miss her!

Update: Even when the dogs came home, she came all the way to the bottom of the stairs with Buddy about 2 yards away from her. I freaked and yelled, so she ran back up!

Our New Bed

We thought Buddy would be the first...and I think he was, but here was the first encounter.

After that he went to the rug in front of the door and laid down. At first we didn't quite get the hang of it.

Buddy's New Love

Jade Before: Not so exciting....

Jade After: Lovin' it! Now when you look to find Buddy you will find Jade usually wrapped up in his paws. He is cuddling her like crazy, sniffin' her, and last night even humped her!She looks rather ridiculous, but it's gotta feel so much better. Although in this picture I wonder if she's cold? :-)

I wrote that last post before I saw the end of Marley and Me.

Uh, now I'm sitting here crying.

I just have so many thoughts that this will be us one day. The one dog I see Will carrying to the car and I think about is Behr. I know this is because he's the biggest pain in the ass. He requires the most attention. I don't think I'll ever say he's the worst dog in the world, like they talked about Marley, but we have our moments.

Gosh, I love him so much!

Things to do:
Adopt, don't shop
Crate your dog
Supervise outside play
Use a leash
Use a leash, especially in the car or at the beach
Tether your puppy when potty training
Exercise your dog before going to group lessons
Expect respect
Treat for all four paws on the ground
Prong collars can be your friend
Correct for excessive barking and whining
Hire a confident dog sitter or a great kennel
Feed on a schedule
Train your dog prior to having kids, so you don't ever think of re-homing him
Feed something other than puppy chow/alpo/science diet

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie. But it was kind of like watching a train wreck.

After group lessons in the rain yesterday with quite a few other dog-crazy folks with us...

The trainer emailed me this,
"I thought Behr did well at class yesterday…."

Woo Hoo!! I love you, Behr.

I did show off a bit. He called us down to show how Behr heels and he goes around me to the heeling position. Then he was saying that is one way, and he was going to tell about the other way...and I said oh, we can do that too. We say left, and that way Behr comes to the side and heels, not all the way around us. I did a little jump and got a laugh from the crowd. I loved it! I was really proud.

Brandy made it to her foster Mama, Heather.

She was very skinny, matted behind the ears, the hair was just falling off by the clumps. She is a 10 month old owner surrender.

She was starving for attention, I thought she was gonna end up in DH's lap for sure, or he was gonna crawl to the back to love on her. Very sweet, gentle, and didn't jump at all.

Oh and tonight I got an email from the rescue (North Carolina SBR) and they wanted to reimburse us for gas! Does that happen often? We said no way, we loved doing it.

I just took Behr and Jade on a walk. They both wore their bookbags and we got many looks!
Behr's bag has a bottle of unopened Ranch and powerade. Jade's bag has two bottles of water, and I made her carry Behr's poop, her pockets were easier to quickly open.

I'm quickly learning that it sucks to walk Jade. She won't run, walks very slow, and lags behind. So I have no clue why I put a bookbag on her! She was slowing us way down.

We passed many pups and there was no barking!

Trainer Called

The trainer called tonight to ask how Behr was doing. I was happy to report I've been walking both him and Jade at the same time without any problems.

The trainer was very nice, but in short he said Behr will fail the Canine Good Citizen Test tonight, so you don't have to come. I told him I wanted to. I talked to Will and then I called the trainer back to tell him thanks for saving me the gas across town and that we won't come.

I'm bummed. Even though I knew he couldn't accept a stranger or another dog. I was still hopeful and looking forward to going, even just to see him pass a few items.

I think it just kinda hurt my pride, or my hope for Behr. We have grown so much closer just from taking this class, which makes me very happy just getting that from the class, no CGC is okay.
I didn't want to lose this, so I'm adding it here.
A great internet friend, that I've also met IRL wrote this to me about this post:

I know I don't know Behr like you and Tommy do, but from an outsider's perspective, he really is a good dog. You guys just have very high expectations (which is awesome, because you are working towards getting him where you want him to be) but you should know that when I look at Behr I see a good, intelligent, very well behaved typical young GSD with energy to burn. He knows more commands than my Maggie who I've had for almost 7 years now- he's just very clear letting other dogs and people know that he sees them when he's on leash!

I've walked Behr and Buddy with you before and I remember being shocked because I thought they both behaved so well! Sure, they tugged at the leash and barked sometimes, but that's no worse than Maggie constantly getting underfoot and coming close to killing me except that she doesn't frighten people when she does it. And you and DH are awesome for spending the fortune you're spending on getting him to the level you want him to be at. Other people might be afraid of him but honestly I think that has to do as much with his breed and size as his behavior- when I've seen him bark at things, it's not in an "I'm-going-to-eat-you" way, it's just an alert bark. We took Maddie to Ben and Jerry's free cone day yesterday and people moved away from us downtown and gave us the side eye, and she's not even close to as big as your boys! People associate GSDs with police dogs and they can look imposing, especially when they bark at things.

So anyway, Behr isn't ready to take his CGC. He will be someday, though, and in the meantime, I'm sending a virtual Pet Owner of the Year award for spending thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours training your dogs to be well behaved citizens, even though you guys are totally diligent enough that I really don't think you ever have to worry about someone getting bitten. You could just have the attitude "meh, my dogs scare you but they're on leash and not hurting anyone, so I'll let them be free to be who they are." And I really wouldn't condemn you for it. But you have gone above and beyond to try and make your dogs as non-threatening as possible even though they likely will never hurt anyone in their lifetimes even with no training! So you guys are awesome. And Behr will get there eventually.

We heading to Charleston Animal Society to pull Betty.

The German Shepherd Club sent this email describing her:
”Betty” female GSD. About 1 year old and weighs 57 pounds. Abandoned. Low HW positive. Betty has a very sweet disposition, a little shy, but warms up quickly. Time Up 4/17

They held her overnight and we are going to get her now. No she's not living with us....this time I'm truly taking her straight to Michelle's house to be fostered there.

UPDATE: We just dropped her off at Michelle's house. Ends up she was in heat when she came to the shelter, but was fixed yesterday. She is super skinny but very mellow and sweet.

Update: Michelle reports she has littl manners, has never seen a leash, but loves to lay on the couch.

Behr's Lessons

Tonight was our last group lesson with Behr. Next Wednesday we go at 8:15 to see if we can pass the Canine Good Citizen Program! HA.

On the other hand, Behr did very well tonight, just like the last lesson. Will and two other dog owners were impressed and commented on how he was improving around other dogs and people.

I posted the requirements on here last June, well it's April and we still aren't there yet!

Will has been leaving Buddy and Jade out while he walks Behr in the morning. If Buddy is crated and Will leaves with Behr he howls like no other wolf. Well this morning was the last time I get to sleep and hit snooze two times. From now on Buddy will be crated.

Will came back to find the furminator handle chewed off and the current book I'm reading, Love the One Your With gnawed on...here's the kicker it's not mine! It's Shana's...so Shana, I hope that copy wasn't special, I don't think it was autographed...but I'll replace the book!! Don't worry Baby Proof is upstairs by my bed, yet to be read. I was reading on the couch last night that's why the other one was downstairs. I'm so sorry!

Prong Collar

I know many people are against this tool. However, hear me out.

I've walked Behr two times now for over 40 minutes and we've had no problem. I don't even have to use it. He doesn't dart toward other dogs, squirrels, or people. It's great. I think it has lifted my confidence with walking him.

Tommy, our trainer said that soon we will just keep it on his neck, but the leash won't be connected. We are using it as a learning tool, not forever. Will is still pretty skeptical, but he doesn't walk Behr at 5pm like I do.

Sheena and Catnip!

Even though I clip Sheena's nails often they need to be "filed." They have rough edges that pick the carpet and get stuck to her nails. So I bought her this cardboard thing. Well it had a catnip pack in it, so I HAD to use it!

I can see her saying, "I love this thing." As she lays on her side holding it with both arms and rubbing her face on it...doing anything but scratching!

Someone commented about the biking apparatus. Yes I did get it...I don't remember all the problems, but there were some with Springer USA, I think...can't remember.
In the end it cost me about $90 with the attachment, a harness, and a helmet for me!

I will post pictures soon. Me and Behr went on a ride earlier, and I just got back from taking Buddy. Jade can slip out of the harness so she can't go, but she hates running anyway! I'll do this more often because the weather was really nice this afternoon!

I just found a tapeworm on Jade's face! Uhh it was right beside her eye. So I began using my detective skills and searching poo. Well Behr went first, I suspected he was the culprit, but nope. Buddy went next and after digging around his poo, with the bag on my hand of course I found one worm. BARF! I would not have found it without digging.

So poor Buddy, heartworms and tapeworms...He'll be back at the vet on Monday.

Buddy went to see the vet about heartworm treatment today. The vet saw no other symptoms of HW so he said we should wait until it cools down. I'm thinking, uh January? But no he said Nov. 1st. So we are to put him on heartguard and make an appointment then.

Will said the vet was really proud, kinda wowwed when Will told them our routine, exercise, brand of food and all. Go us! (Really thank the pet nesties) Now we need to "upgrade" Sheena!

Our Mountain Trip

Just layin' on each other

Jade at my feet when she needed her own space.

On our long Labor Day weekend we loaded up and headed home for Millers Creek, NC. It took us about 6 hours to get there.
Will picked me up from school at 3:00 in the carpool line. We were on the road about 30 minutes and Buddy throws up! Note: don't feed dogs the day of travel.

We got home and let the dogs out. To my surprise we didn't use leashes and they just hung out with us. Will's family owns a lot of property on the side of a mountain with a river it is just awesome place for the dogs, especially ones that live in an apartment.

We went swimming both days. Day 1 they found the mud hole!

The dogs also met Katie the cat...now I didn't see this but I did see the damage. Will decided (which now he says was a REALLY dumb idea) to grab Katie away from Buddy and Behr. Katie proceeded to claw Will's neck so much she couldn't get her nail back out. She also bit his hands multiple times. He still can't wear his wedding band it is so swollen!

We did some yard work and the dogs ran with the truck, then rode back with me and Susan (MIL) in the bed of the truck. They loved it, and I loved seeing them get to do these activities.

We hope to make it back again soon with the dogs. I was surprised we were invited back, but it really was easy since they didn't run off and stayed on the wrap around porch when we were inside. It was kinda odd many times I'd peek outside and they had free range, but would be on the porch and Behr would be in the crate we took for Buddy.
